Tobacco earnings in Malawi, the world’s biggest producer of burley tobacco, fell 5 percent in the year through Nov. 19 because of a drop in sales, the Bank of Malawi said.

The southern African country earned $410.6 million from the leaf in the 2010 season compared with $434.4 million a year earlier, the Lilongwe-based central bank said in a newsletter on its website. Tobacco sales declined 6.8 percent to 216.7 million kilograms (476.7 million pounds), it said.
