Nigeria’s main militant group in the Niger River delta said its fighters killed 10 government soldiers in an attack yesterday, a claim the country’s military later denied.
The attack occurred in Ayakoromo in Delta state when rebel fighters ambushed a convoy of army gunboats, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said today in an e-mailed statement. “This convoy was literally decimated,” MEND spokesman Jomo Gbomo said in the statement. The rebels said they plan to take more hostages from the region’s oil facilities.
