Bahrainis voted today in parliamentary elections that occurred after campaign season clashes between police and members of the country’s Shiite Muslim majority who say they face discrimination.
The vote in the Persian Gulf island kingdom, home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, was the third since constitutional changes in 2001, with 146 candidates competing for 40 seats in the lower house of parliament. About 318,000 people were registered to vote. Results will start to be released Sunday.
