Karl today became a “major” hurricane, packing winds of 120 miles an hour and bearing down on Mexico’s east coast after closing oil wells in the Gulf, while Bermuda issued a hurricane watch as Igor’s forecast track takes it within 11.5 miles of the island early next week.
Karl is now a Category 3 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 10 a.m. Mexico City time. Winds increased from 100 mph (160 kilometers per hour) late yesterday, and the storm’s eye was 25 miles northeast of Veracruz, Mexico, the center said.
