Tea Party-backed Christine O’Donnell defeated a veteran lawmaker for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination in Delaware, an upset analysts said would increase Democrats’ chances of holding the seat and retaining control of the chamber in November.

O’Donnell, a marketing consultant, became the latest insurgent this year to overcome opposition from Republican party leaders to win a Senate nomination. Endorsed last week by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, O’Donnell beat U.S. Representative Mike Castle in yesterday’s primary, 53 percent to 47 percent.
