Serena Williams Says She Had Surgery on Foot Tendon, USA Today Reports
Serena Williams pulled out of the U.S. Open tennis tournament after she walked through glass in a restaurant and tore a tendon in her right foot, USA Today quoted the top-ranked player as saying.
Williams had surgery on her foot on July 15 at the Kerlan- Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, the newspaper reported. The procedure came a week after the 13-time Grand Slam champion received 12 stitches in one foot and six in another after walking through glass at a restaurant in Munich, Germany.
“I came back to the U.S. from Germany and knew something was not right,” Williams told USA Today. “My big toe was drooping, and I thought, ‘My toe shouldn’t be hanging like this.’ I saw a specialist in New York and had an MRI, and he said I had a tendon that was torn. He said I didn’t necessarily have to fix it, but I’d have a droopy toe the rest of my life. I thought it over and decided it was better to have the surgical procedure, for my career and for my life.”
Williams said he didn’t know exactly how she hurt her foot. She hadn’t given previously details on the injury that has kept her away from the women’s tour since winning her fourth Wimbledon title in July.
The player hurt the foot leaving a restaurant. She said she felt pain, then continued walking before the discomfort returned.
“My practice partner put a cell phone down to the floor so we could see, and there was a huge puddle of blood,” she told the newspaper. “I said, ‘OMG, I don’t think this is good.’”
Williams, 28, said she will visit the U.S. Open tomorrow to watch her sister Venus play. Last year, Serena’s semifinal against eventual champion Kim Clijsters ended in controversy after an expletive-filled outburst over a foot fault cost her the match.
Williams’ lack of information regarding the injury has been criticized, particularly since she played an exhibition against Clijsters in Belgium shortly after cutting her foot. The New York Times on Aug. 27 ran an article with the headline: ‘Williams’s Injury Needs Explanation’.
