Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the outcome of Australia’s election won’t be known for days after voters split their support between her Labor Party and Tony Abbott’s Liberal-National coalition in the tightest national ballot in almost five decades.

“The people have spoken but it’s going to take a little while to determine exactly what they said,” Gillard, 48, told supporters in the southern city of Melbourne where she lives. “Obviously this is too close to call and there are a number of seats where the result is undecided and it will take a number of days of counting to determine the result.”
