A group of Congolese men armed with blowpipes, machetes and other traditional weapons killed three Indian peacekeepers at a United Nations base in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo early today, a UN official said.

Five unarmed men entered the UN compound seeking assistance at about 2 a.m., then distracted guards and let about 50 more men with weapons onto the base, where they attacked the peacekeepers, according to the UN official, who asked not to be identified. The six-minute fight left three other UN soldiers critically wounded.
