Most of us wouldn’t think to pop the champagne if we heard that the U.S. divorce rate was rising. Economists see these things differently, though. To them, it shows that people who were trapped in marriages for financial reasons are now in good enough financial shape to move on. In their world, rising divorce rates are simply a sign that the economy is picking up.

A Bloomberg ranking of the divorce rate by state shows that living in the cold north, either on the east or west coast, may be harmful to marital health. Here’s a look at the 25 states with the highest percentage of divorces. The ranking includes a look at the long-term rise or fall in state marriage rates, as well the size of the states' never-married, married and separated populations.
