Ukraine bonds.
In 2013 Ukraine almost signed an agreement with the European Union that would have integrated it more closely into Europe. Instead, at the last minute, Ukraine rejected the EU and instead accepted a deal with Russia. This deal included, among other things, a $3 billion loan in the form of Eurobonds that were denominated in dollars, governed by English law, listed on the Irish stock exchange and due in December 2015. This deal led to popular protests in Ukraine and the resignation of the Ukrainian president, which in turn was followed by Russia’s annexation of Crimea and support for a separatist war in the eastern Ukraine.
