Obama Can Safely Ignore Saudi Tantrums

Shashank Joshi, MBBS, MD, DM, FACE,FACP is a Consultant Physician in Retroviral Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Endocrinology & Diabetes at Lilavati Hospital, India. He is the Emeritus Editor of JAPI (Journal of Association of Physicians of India). Dr. Joshi has over 400 research papers published and is on the Faculty of KJ Somaiya Medical College. He is involved in developing low cost care and therapy models for resource limited situations in India. Dr. Joshi was a member of the core committee for the Association of Physicians of India Guidelines for Anti-Retroviral Therapy. He is the Current Vice President of Association of Physicians of India and the Chapter Chairman of American College of Clinical Endocrinology. He runs the Joshi Clinic at Bandra West. He is also a lead expert on Nutrition and the Convener of Indian Diabetes Guidelines.

Saudi Arabia has been throwing a diplomatic temper tantrum lately, threatening a “major shift” away from the U.S. over differences on Iran, Syria and other issues. The Obama administration can relax.

Trouble has been brewing in this relationship for years. Saudi Arabia was aghast at President Barack Obama’s support for the 2011 Egyptian revolution, which overthrew another old U.S. ally, former President Hosni Mubarak. It was aggrieved, too, at the lack of U.S. support for that year’s Saudi-led intervention to put down a pro-democracy uprising in Bahrain.
