Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- These days, one of the saddeststories on Page 1 is about newspapers themselves. All over thecountry, venerable old dailies are shedding reporters, editorsand other workers.
In my hometown, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer stopped itspresses for good in 2009, as did the Rocky Mountain News, inDenver. In the past few years, major papers have gone bankruptin Philadelphia, Minneapolis and other cities, as circulationand advertising revenue have plummeted. Even the proud New YorkTimes recently needed a $250 million loan from Carlos Slim, aMexican multibillionaire.
