France’s Communist Party leader Pierre Laurent called Wednesday for a single candidacy uniting the far-left’s Jean-Luc Melenchon and Socialist contender Benoit Hamon.
“The conversion of Manuel Valls to the candidacy of Emmanuel Macron justifies such a candidacy," Laurent said in a statement on his party’s website. Valls, a Socialist and a former prime minister, said earlier Wednesday that he will vote for Macron rather than his party’s candidate.
