These are the times that try large language models’ souls. New research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab finds that 95% of companies have gotten no return so far on their investment in generative artificial intelligence. The latest model update from industry leader OpenAI, GPT-5, underwhelmed earlier this month. Perhaps worst of all, Catherine Thorbecke reports, AI is becoming the butt of online insults. Gen-Zers have taken to using the word “clanker” — a borrowing from the Star Wars universe — as “a blanket derogatory term for artificial intelligence and robots.”
