Traditionalists may not like the direction shows are heading in, but it could save New York City’s theater district from obscurity.
Throughout the month of October, Broadway audiences received retro Playbill covers in celebration of the magazine’s 140th anniversary. The programs are a lovely tribute to history, but in order for New York City’s theater district to thrive, it needs to look forward, not backward.
Traditionalists don’t want to hear this, but Broadway has to take more risks in order to resonate with a new generation of theatergoers (and theater-curious people) on social media. If it fails to do so, there may not be much left to celebrate by the time Playbill turns 200.
