Texas Latinos Flocked to Trump. They’re Having Second Thoughts
Trying to turn Texas blue
Photographer: Ronald BrownsteinWith a wry smile, Bobby Pulido, a Tejano singing star running for the US House as a Democrat, looked over the crowd at the Coyote Arms Shooting Center in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley one sultry evening last week.
Dozens of Latino men and women outfitted in boots, blue jeans and western shirts had gathered for a fundraising skeet shoot benefiting a local Democratic judge. Many of the men had 12-gauge shotguns slung over their shoulders, ready for the competition. Crowds were sampling the roasted cabrito (baby goat) and lechon (suckling pig). “I’ll bet you,” Pulido told me conspiratorially, “that 70% of the people here voted for Trump.”
