Sanae Takaichi must have thought it was all coming together.

As Japan’s prime minister dazzled last week on social media — drumming with her South Korean counterpart Lee Jae Myung, followed by anime selfies with Italian leader Giorgia Meloni — she was also drafting plans to call a snap election that her polling numbers suggested could be a coronation.
