One topic dominated the chat as Labour lawmakers congregated at their many festive drinks parties in London in recent days: How and when could they depose flailing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and who should replace him?

For a worryingly large number, the answer to the last question is disgraced former deputy leader Angela Rayner, who continues to exert power and influence despite quitting the government in September for failing to pay full taxes on a property deal.
