In case the UK and the European Union failed to get the message, Donald Trump amplified his administration’s new National Security Strategy in an interview with Politico last week: The old continent is led by “weak leaders” who “don’t know what to do.” Europe’s civilization is “decaying” because of uncontrolled immigration.
Sigmund Freud would say that the president’s anxiety about Europe’s expanding ethnic minorities is a form of “projection” — when a person attributes their own deepest, unspoken fears to someone else. The US will have a non-white majority by the 2040s; people from a minority-ethnic background make up about 16% of the UK population. But his critique of insipid leadership does ring true, particularly in military matters, even if it’s hard to hear from a man so enraptured by the warmonger Vladimir Putin.
