Europe Should Use Russia’s Billions to Defend Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hopes to win access to long-range American missiles when he visits the White House today. Even if he succeeds, that’ll only be half the battle.

With the US now talking about another summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and disinclined to provide more financial support, European nations will have to fill the yawning financing gap that threatens Ukraine’s ability to buy such weapons, pay soldiers and rebuild shattered infrastructure. Exploiting frozen Russian central bank assets should be central to their strategy.
