The US blindsided India when it imposed 50% tariffs on most of its exports last month — higher than for almost any other country — and has reportedly floated the idea of raising them to punish its purchases of Russian oil. Not surprisingly, Indian leaders have responded defiantly, resisting demands to redirect oil buying or lower politically sensitive import barriers, while none too subtly cozying up to US rivals.
