Texas Is Betting Latinos Will Swing Republican. That’s a Risk.
It’s a mistake to bank on the loyalty of voters who are still displeased with the economy and have been disproportionately targeted by ICE raids.

Photographer: Brandon Bell/Getty ImagesRepublicans are making a risky assumption as they attempt to rewrite the Texas Congressional map with a mid-decade power grab designed to net five additional seats: They’re betting that Latino voters who voted for President Donald Trump in record numbers last year will elect Republican congressional candidates in the midterms.
But Texas’ Latino voters have soured on the president, according to a June poll by the University of Texas and the Texas Politics Project. Trump’s favorability rating among Texas Latinos has declined to 38%.
