Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth spent his first 100 days in office in an unending flood of controversy. His confirmation hearing, which required a tie-breaking vote by Vice President JD Vance, was an early indicator of just how bumpy his voyage would be.

Next came the so-called Signalgate controversy, in which he and other top Trump officials revealed sensitive information about forthcoming missile strikes to a group chat that included a reporter. That was followed by revelations of another Signal chat involving similarly confidential matters that included his wife, brother and personal lawyer. Then came reports he used an unclassified and unprotected laptop on his desk in the secretary’s office.
