Republicans in Congress Aren’t Going to Stop This Trade War

Many in the GOP have adopted Trump’s protectionist views. And even if they haven’t, bucking the president is political suicide.

The bond market doesn’t vote.

After Jan. 6, 2021, 10 Republicans in the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for his part in that day, when a violent mob attacked the US Capitol as part of a deliberate attempt to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss. The following year, nearly every single one of those Republicans either lost renomination or were chased into premature retirement by vengeful primary voters, punished for the twin sins of acknowledging the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election and holding Trump accountable for the events of Jan. 6.
