Trump cheered March consumer price data while pursuing tariffs that will increase costs for businesses and households.

Inflation cooled in the month of March, and President Donald Trump is celebrating. “INFLATION IS DOWN!!!” he declared on Truth Social. “Promises Made. Promises Kept!” wrote White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on X.

It is ridiculous but predictable that the administration is portraying March data in this manner. Trump’s sweeping new tariffs are likely to dramatically alter the course of prices and the broader economy in the months to come — a fact that’s as true today as it was before the president haphazardly amended the policy on Wednesday.
