Trump Can’t Erase Trans People With a Stroke of His Sharpie

Defending the rights of transgender and nonbinary people isn’t only about waging legal battles. It’s about more persuasive arguments.

With a barrage of executive orders, President Donald Trump used much of his first week back in the White House to dismantle the rights and the futures of people of color and immigrants. But notice who he singled out in his inauguration speech: transgender and nonbinary people, a minority within the minority LGBTQ+ community.

“It will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders,” Trump said during his address at the Capitol Rotunda. “Male and female.”
