The Relationship Between the US and UK Is More Than Special

Over the past almost three years, I have had the extraordinary privilege of representing the United States in the United Kingdom and observing the “special relationship” up close. Countless column inches have been dedicated to the topic — and yet this unique partnership continues to surprise us.

And while I don’t think it’s time to retire the famous Churchillian term, I do believe the relationship America has with the UK is far more than special. It is deeper, more flexible and more dynamic than it ever has been. It fortifies the prospects for peace and prosperity far beyond the borders of our two countries. While in the Oval Office with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Joe Biden last July, there was a moment of congratulations to the new prime minister, but our teams quickly turned to working out how we’d address the latest global challenges. I realized more than ever, without the leadership and the decisive actions of the United States and the United Kingdom, the world would be a very different place.
