The judiciary is closing in on Jair Bolsonaro.

On Thursday, Brazil’s federal police recommended charges against the former president and 36 of his close allies — including 25 members of the military — after obtaining evidence that in 2022 they plotted a coup to prevent his successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from reaching power. More dramatically, the police’s investigation also alleged that Bolsonaro knew about a plot to assassinate Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes in the wake of the last presidential election, according to reports on Brazil’s media.
