Who would the Chinese President Xi Jinping prefer as his next counterpart in the White House? The world’s second-largest economy is repeatedly cited as America’s greatest strategic challenge. Regardless of who wins the election next week, that won’t change. China should anticipate a tougher political climate ahead.

Beijing is watching closely to see how the next US leader will impact its most important relationship. After a recent meeting between Foreign Minister Wang Yi and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, the official Chinese readout noted that keeping ties “on the right track lies in the guidance of the two heads of state.”
