The US presidential race is at last coming to a head. Next Tuesday’s televised debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump promises to be a turning point, with the direction thereafter depending largely on how well or how badly Harris performs. America’s electoral college virtually ensures that the race will remain open to the last minute — or even beyond. The state of Congress, where both chambers at present look likely to change hands, adds to the complexity. And both candidates this week announced shifts in their policies on tax.
