Some People Can Wait to Get the New Covid Shot

Delaying vaccination until October could help extend protection through the winter.

The latest Covid vaccines from Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc. are hitting US pharmacy shelves, raising a now-perennial fall question: Will anyone bother getting them?

In theory, the updated Covid shots couldn’t come at a better time. The US is dealing with yet another summer surge, which in some parts of the country looked a lot closer in magnitude (by wastewater data standards, at least) to our last two winter outbreaks. The rising numbers have been driven by a combination of new variants and the public’s waning immunity, with an assist from an inordinately hot summer that drove many people indoors.
