China’s once-in-five-years conclave, where top officials brainstorm policies to chart the country’s economic future, is an important event. Pity nobody’s paying attention. Instead, people are fascinated by the US presidential election, a vote that won’t directly impact their daily lives.

The jostle for the White House is full of twists and turns. And no doubt, its outcome affects China on a macro level. The direction of the dollar and US-China relations dictate the cost of imports as well as China’s industrial exports, a rare bright spot in an otherwise uninspiring economy.
