As soon as President Joe Biden lumbered out onto the debate stage looking pale, stiff, and very much his 81 years of age, you could almost hear Democrats’ collective sigh of defeat. The hope was that the US — ahead of a pivotal and cutthroat election — would see Biden like he was at the State of the Union: confident, coherent, and full of promise. Instead, the fear voters have made clear in polling was realized.
