Amid cascading crises — a stalemated war in Ukraine, a febrile and violent Middle East, a clash for primacy with China — it is easy to despair for America’s global position. Optimism might come from a reminder that the underlying indices of US power look quite good.

For all the talk about China’s ascent and America’s decline, the reality is that in economic terms the US is actually rising relative to its chief adversary. Which means that relinquishing its global leadership, as one well-known presidential candidate advocates, would not be a concession to necessity but a retreat of choice
