In early 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a sprawling, brutal follow-up to his land-grab of Crimea in 2014. Casualty figures are hard to assess precisely, but tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed or wounded on both sides of the war — with the full tally estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.
