Kevin McCarthy’s drawn-out humiliation at the hands of far-right tormenters as he sought to become House speaker dominated the news for understandable reasons: His inability to control his caucus is a big reason why Congress is shaping up to be a historic mess.
Partly for that reason, a concurrent development didn’t get much notice, but ought to count as a hopeful sign that the Republican-led House might not immediately slide into chaos.
