Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sent oil and gas prices soaring, prompting fears of another oil shock. Will it endure for years, like the one resulting from the Arab oil embargo in the early 1970s, or will it be over in months, as in the aftermath of Iraq’s annexation of Kuwait in 1990? And are political leaders preparing their citizens for the consequences?

These questions came up in a Twitter Spaces discussion hosted by Bloomberg Opinion’s Bobby Ghosh, featuring columnists Javier Blas and Liam Denning. This is an edited transcript of their conversation.
