Twenty years ago, Americans were pretty happy with their war in Afghanistan. The calculus seemed simple at first: Al-Qaeda attacked us from Afghanistan. Let’s attack Afghanistan to kill al-Qaeda, take out its Taliban sponsors, and prevent more attacks.
