Taiwan’s Politics of Pained Prosperity

Having spent some days traveling around Taiwan and talking with Taiwanese, I would like to suggest an underappreciated but also somewhat scary truth: Taiwan has the most interesting politics in the world.

Taiwan has a remarkable origin story. As the Communists were winning the civil war in China 70 years ago, the losing Nationalists organized an exodus and about 1.2 million mainlanders came to Taiwan to live in the last remnant of the Republic of China.
