Can Private Equity Save the World’s Greatest Sandwich?

It’s not too early to be excited about the revival of D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches in New England (and it’s never too early for a slice of pizza).

Drooling yet?

The finest fast-food sandwich1 in the land is the Number 9 pocket made by D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches. The core ingredient is fresh grilled steak, to which various vegetables are added while the meat is cooking. Melt several slices of cheese on top, stuff everything into a pita pocket and there you have it: the Number 9. I can’t explain why it’s so much better than anything else out there. But with my decades of experience eating fast food,2 I know whereof I speak.

D’Angelo, which sells lots of other good sandwiches besides the Number 9, is a small New England restaurant chain; it currently has 75 units. When I was raising my older kids in Northampton, Massachusetts, my two sons and I would go to the local D’Angelo every Saturday. It was our ritual. I live in New York now,3 but whenever I find myself in New England, I’ll go miles out of my way if I see a D’Angelo on my GPS.
