Throughout her time as prime minister, Theresa May has had two overriding objectives: sealing her deal to take Britain out of the European Union and holding her divided Conservative Party together – preferably with her as leader.

Both goals look impossible after she laid out her latest, and in all likelihood last, offer to MPs on Tuesday.
