The president is weak and unpopular. His party knows it.

For Democrats who want to be president, the logic of the 2020 cycle is simple: There’s nothing close to a strong front-runner yet, and there’s a pretty good chance that the party’s nominee will win the general election, so now is the time to run. That’s why at least 30 Democrats have so far done candidate-like things this cycle. (I count 32; others put it even higher.)

But for Republicans? It’s a much harder choice.
