This week on Masters in Business, we speak with Dana Telsey, of the Telsey Advisory Group, a research firm she founded in 2006 that specializes in the study and analysis of retailers, real-estate investment trusts and restaurants.

Telsey, who was a top-rated Institutional Investor analyst for 13 straight years, emphasizes the importance of visiting stores, meeting shoppers, interacting with employees, looking at merchandise, assessing store traffic and seeing customer reactions. She notes that in every city she travels to for work or pleasure, she spends time looking at regional and national stores, as well as malls. What some people call shopping, to Telsey is economic research.
