Aug. 1 (Bloomberg) -- When, under intense politicalpressure, the National Cancer Institute changed its position onmammograms in 1997, recommending the screens every other yearfor women in their 40s, the primacy of politics over science inthis matter was firmly established.

In the future, if a conclusion based on scientific data waspolitically untenable, it would simply be overruled by politicalleaders.
