Latin American Reporters Find Democracy Is Perilous

May 23 (Bloomberg) -- On the last day of April, the body ofRegina Martinez, a 49-year-old journalist who had been beatenand strangled to death, was found on the floor of her apartmentin Xalapa, the capital of the Mexican state of Veracruz.
She had written on local affairs for Proceso, Mexico’sleading news magazine, for the past 10 years, and had recentlypublished reports on the drug war in Veracruz between two rivaland murderous cartels. Her writing included accusations oflocal-government corruption.
