June 14 (Bloomberg) -- You didn’t really think GoldmanSachs Group Inc. would go down without a fight now did you?Of course not. So it should come as little surprise thatrecently Goldman has started to push back hard against itsnemesis, Senator Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan, and hisnarrative that the firm is the lead villain of thefinancial crisis.

In its new mission, Goldman has been very careful notto take on Levin directly -- after all he remains a verypowerful figure in Congress and incurring his further wrathwould be plain silly. Instead, the firm has taken its caseto the court of public opinion, through a series oforchestrated presentations with members of the mainstreambusiness press and to at least one Wall Street researchanalyst.
