A First Look Inside the Shed, New York’s New $475 Million Arts Center

Computer renderings of the Shed have circulated so widely and for so long that the building takes on a slightly surreal quality in person. In the context of the glassy Hudson Yards on the far west side of Manhattan—near the gleaming insectoid Vessel—the milky, translucent exoskeleton of the Shed seems almost a fantasy.

But after several years’ construction and more than half a billion dollars in fundraising (including from Michael Bloomberg, founder and majority owner of Bloomberg LP), the building is almost ready to open.
