How Amazon’s Black Friday Looks in Europe

It’s relatively new, and many Europeans are still trying to figure out where Black Friday came from.

Black Friday was virtually unknown to Europeans until the early 2010s, when Apple and Amazon.com exported a trend that’s now gripping shoppers from London to Paris to Rome. In Germany, the region’s biggest economy, thousands of retailers—from online fashion shop Zalando to brick-and-mortar electronics stores Media Markt and Saturn—have slapped discounts on their wares. Amazon has been running a full week of sales in Germany, its largest market outside the U.S., ahead of Black Friday. Here’s a glimpse at the frenzy in Amazon’s fulfillment center in Koblenz, one of 12 such sites in Germany.
