A brief history of the ups and downs of an iconic American muscle car.
Today the 10 millionth Mustang will roll off the assembly line at Ford Motor Co.’s plant in Michigan. Though that number doesn’t come close to the brand’s top-selling F-150—more than 26 million of those pickups have been sold since 1977—you could argue that the Mustang is the most recognizable sports car still produced in the world today, equaled only, perhaps, by the Porsche 911, which last year celebrated its 1 million milestone.
The first Ford Mustang debuted at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. It was introduced as a hardtop and convertible; a fastback version went on sale in August 1964. At an initial starting price of $2,368, Ford sold more than 22,000 on the first day of sales.
