Good morning and welcome back. Mega battery installations are having a big moment. As conflict in the Middle East pushes up fossil fuel costs and power demand from data centers keeps climbing, they are looking like an appealing alternative.

Australia offers a pretty striking preview of what this shift looks like in practice. It’s already the world’s biggest battery market per person, and the changes are starting to show. Not long after part of the Waratah Super Battery in New South Wales was switched on last year, batteries briefly delivered more power to the main grid during the evening peak than gas-fired plants. The project is due to be fully operational in 2026.
